I think I saw a paper on this kind of thing over a year ago. Iirc, it said that engagement is lower on Mastodon, but higher quality.

I had to do it for the first time last year and I was slightly giddy from the novelty of it.
This is an excellent comment, thanks for writing this up
So far, I’m pleasantly surprised by Labour. The bar was exceptionally low, but still
Something that I’ve wanted from a dictionary app for a while is the ability to add custom definitions for words that I may not have a dictionary for.
For example, I am told by a friend that the Finnish word “pimahtaa” means “to go ape removed”. I don’t plan on learning Finnish, so I don’t need a whole Finnish dictionary.
Another less isolated example is how when I was learning Attic Greek, I wanted to build my own personal dictionary from the ground up, where the only words in it would be what I had learned and added myself, also allowing me to add new words.
It feels like a fairly simple problem to solve, but I’m not sure what to search for, I wonder if you have any advice, OP?
Neat idea, I hope I’ll remember this when I’m setting up my next server.

Adding this because I only learned this acronym just last week, and wish to share the knowledge with anyone else like me)
Oh man, Clockwork mod, that takes me back. Although I had my android phone for a while before I built up the courage to root it, in part due to stories like yours
Not got any computer related stories from my messed up family, but I can relate to many of the vibes here. Solidarity on the family front.
Oh no, that’s horrifying.
Man, that’s a really dumb story that I find really relatable despite not having had any experiences like that. It feels like it’d be very in character for me though. Thanks for sharing, it helps me feel less silly in the various times where I’ve messed up (of which I am struggling to recall specific examples, but whatever brain part is responsible for embarrassment can remember, apparently)
I agree - it can be overwhelming to constantly be reminded of areas in which one is lacking in knowledge (like when having to learn how to solve a relatively simple error), but the availability of learning resources really helps avoid demoralisation.
Ha, I didn’t get it, but now I do. That is quite a funny joke now you’ve explained it. Comedy is indeed hard
I mean, that’s sort of what admins already are, right? Just not democratically elected
I don’t know if I have anything worth sharing on this thread, but I’m just going and up-voting basically everyone in solidarity. Thank you to everyone for demonstrating that “smart person” and “dumbass who does foolish things” are not mutually exclusive, it sure helps me feel better about my past and future mistakes.
There was a scientific paper I read semi recently that showed that researchers who post on Mastodon get much higher quality interaction than on Twitter (and I think a few other social-media type places, but it was mainly Mastodon vs Twitter). There was overall less interaction on Mastodon (unsurprisingly), but also that this difference has been diminishing as Mastodon grows. My takeaway is that if you want engagement, go Mastodon.
I need to add that to my quotes book, it’s great
