  • I got lucky, I converted from the ol’ removedheap that reddit became at the time of the protests.

This was in the before-times when folks here were more excited about helping people see the FOSS light than they were complaining about people searching for the FOSS light (repeatedly).

I never needed to make a post of my own, there were a good few getting around and a LOT of helpful/insightful/educational comments with a derth of information and sources provided for further investigation.

Once again (as previously in this comment section), I vote megathread.

  • This is what I did, I’ve been using windows since 98.

I am now on Linux Mint full time, it had it’s teething issues (also not my first distro) but all it took was some DDGing and persistence. I actively cringe when I’m forced to boot into windows for something now.

As I’ve said in previous comments, it’s absolutely worth the effort, spend some time on different distributions, every distro is a little different. On this note, absorb as many suggestions from the Lemmings as possible, regarding Linux and FOSS they really know their removed.

Basically, tread your own path, ask for help if you need it and do it at your own pace, in your own direction. Everyone’s needs are different, the distro list is as long as it is for a reason.

You really do just need to removed around to find out (what you like).

I was going to do this, but ended up happening across the Orange Pi 5 upon release and managed to get an order in.

I had it running Ubuntu 22.04LTS, but there were some OPi specific issues I just wasn’t capable of troubleshooting myself at that stage, I’ve since switched it to 23.01 non LTS and is much better suited to me.

That said, even after discovering gnome extensions I still dont like gnome that much. I’m trying to get a better handle on CLI so I can abandon the desktop all together later.

But yeah, having a whole device just for experimenting with has been huge, very much helps keep me from distractions, I usually will just swing my monitor towards my bed and play twitch while I mess around.

Edit: it’s also saved me the issue of adding to my already chaotic daily filesystem, all my projects are on GitHub, I’ve gotten more proficient at getting a distro going, the urge to hop around a few more is really growing now.
