As a fallback there is always NetBSD.

I’d heard Wayland and Nvidia don’t play nicely together, but forgot KDE had officially made the switch. I’m sure I approved the install a while back but probably assumed it was all stable and compatible now. Guess that’s what I get for not reading the release notes!
Install Linux From Scratch (LFS). Then you can give it your own flavor instead of someone else’s.

Update: No need, the problem was just Wayland vs X11.

And yes my other machine has an AMD card. This will be my last one from Nvidia since I’ve fully switched to Linux.
I’m running Endeavour OS (KDE Plasma) and ran into a weird issue with my graphics. It’s like windows sometimes flicker and flight with each other, some fullscreen videos won’t play and just lock to a gray screen instead (e.g. in Steam, though YouTube is oddly fine), and most 3D games are super choppy and unplayable.
I’m not asking how to fix this, I just want to know how I start troubleshooting! I haven’t done anything special with my system, and I think the issue started after a normal pacman update. My GPU is a GeForce GTX 1060.
Any suggestions to get started? I don’t even know if the issue is Nvidia drivers, X, window manager, KDE, etc.
EDIT: The problem was Wayland. Fixed by logging in with X11 instead!
Barely any, honestly. I only vaguely recall one or two instances in the past year where I couldn’t find what I needed as a Flatpak or similar ready-to-go app. As a general user it’s pretty great honestly and I’m impressed at how easy it’s become.

Endeavour is committed (their philosophy) to no GUI, only CLI commands, so keep that in mind.
That’s actually the first time I’ve seen that mentioned. It’s not highlighted on their website, in fact I had to go digging for this old 2019 article to get some insight on the philosophy there.
I’m not afraid of CLI so this is fine. I’m not an expert by any means but using it more will push me to learn. The updater frontend in Manjaro is kind of inconsistent anyway (e.g. it only shows Flatpaks sometimes) so I’ve often found myself using pacman in the terminal already.
These days I’m most interested in Endeavour and Garuda, mostly as gateways into the Arch world without the headaches. Endeavour seems more mature so that’ll be my next install.
I’m giving up on Manjaro since it seems to lag and have odd discrepancies with Arch/AUR.
Going further back I liked Mint and SuSE and even Ubuntu, but the lack of gaming focus has driven me to other distros.
I don’t really love any that I’ve tried so far, but I dislike Audacious the least. FLAC, Musepack, and ReplayGain support are requirements for my library.
The last one I loved was foobar2000 on Windows, which supplanted Winamp. Linux UIs mostly feel a bit clunky by comparison. When the window has focus I like to have spacebar for pause/play, arrows up/down for primary gain, and arrows left/right for seek.
I had that moment too but I think this is actually intended as “should keep bookmarked”.
Satire or not, it does raise a few points that seem valid. Particularly that “She does not seem to have any experience with GNOME or Linux. In fact… she does not seem to have any experience related to software. At all. In any way.”
Based on the official blog it looks more like GNOME hired her as “an experienced communicator and fundraiser”. So maybe they don’t care whether she even owns a computer as long as she can raise money and woo investors?
I think this is outdated advice. Most folks seem to say the memory usage is similar, CPU/GPU usage is a bit higher in Plasma if you leave effects turned on, and disk usage is higher in Plasma.
I primarily care about RAM and my experience with KDE on the Steam Deck is pretty good so it seems like a solid choice.
I plan to switch soon from Manjaro to Endeavour, and hadn’t yet decided whether I wanted to stick with Xfce. Well, with this endorsement plus reports of good overall performance I think I’ll give Plasma a shot 🙂
Cool, I didn’t know ACLs were a widely available thing but the infographic explains pretty well! Sounds really useful when granular controls are needed, but I could also imagine it being a huge pain in environments already built out and scripted around regular permissions. Still as always, options are good and an ounce of planning is worth a pound of troubleshooting.
I do low-key hate seeing a directory named “dir” and a group named “me” though. That’s chaotic neutral removed at the very least.
I mean if you’re down to NetBSD as your pick you’ve probably already made some big concessions so plugging into Ethernet isn’t a huge leap at that point.
