What a glowing review. When I see these articles I always expect that they will experience one issue and give up or treat their posts exactly like the old platform and be disappointed when it’s doesn’t work.
My account got activated but I still can’t see any videos or anything. Its just an empty settings page.
The thing is that “normies”(I hate the term) weren’t on reddit when it was the size of lemmy. The only experience they have is joining it after it had 10 years of development reached critical mass of users.
So we are stuck being compared to an impossible standard. When I compare Lemmy to old reddit lemmy hands down blows it out of the water. Old reddit had cp and racism on the front page every single day for years. It was hard to use and hostile to new users.
I’ve seen lemmy pop up in search engine posts already which was cool to see. Ive also seen lots of high quality intelligent posts granted they are only tech related but we will grow.
This is really cool. Can you add more detail on how to set this up to the blogpost?
Finally a place to post my tom shelby sigma edits.
The Fediverse has the advantage of being able to control its size. If 10 million people join lemmy tomorrow and most of them go to lemmy.World and then lemmy.World users start causing trouble then that instance gets defederated.
Other than that we only have human moderation which can be overwhelmed.
Misskey should be upper half. Mastodon should be lowest IQ only above threads and non fedi.
Hopefully the Fediverse will be able to have a better take on how to do shortform video than other platforms.
Awesome update and I’m very excited for their next one. Recommendation algorithms are now a must have if you want to attract younger people to the platform.
Do you want this social media to be for your family to use only with family members or for them to use with family and beyond?
Revolt could be good as a local family group chat if you like the discord style. You’ve probably already tried it but Pixelfed/mastodon/misskey sound like the easiest to get family on board with and seem like they would be good family social media platforms IMO.
I don’t care if 99% of users are on once instance as long as people have the option to create their own instances and build on tech software and content created by the community.
Pretty cool graph. It was funny to see the two lemmy.World porn communities in a see of lemmynsfw. I was completely unaware lemmy.World hosted porn.
At the moment federation between platforms is not useful. The only advantage is federation between Instances. I’ve used my sister at a test for what the average woman would think about it.
Aspects she thinks is cool are that it’s owned by people and designed for people, that its left leaning and inclusive.
Aspects she doesn’t care about are privacy, lack of ads, federation between instances, federation between platforms.
Aspects she doesn’t like are her friends aren’t there, none of the accounts she like are there, no recommendation algorithm. She also hates the name fediverse.
I think that we need to stop being boomers clutching our chronological feed and word of mouth discovery and embrace algorithms. That’s not to say we can have chronological feeds it’s just that we should include and option and serve some form of content recommendations.
I also think threads will be a major player in drawing people in. Its easier to convince people who use Instagram to switch from Twitter to threads than Twitter to Mastodon. Once they’re on threads they can start being a part of the fediverse and then eventually they might decide to try out one of the instances.
Thanks I’m gonna give it a go
Someone is going to smash the sensor day 1.
I started on Emacs and then didn’t use it for a few years and forgot everything so now I’m stuck on Nano. But that’s fine because nano does everything I want it to do.
Is zsh a terminal or a language like bash? I don’t get what it is from reading descriptions
25% Camel case, 25% Pascal and 50% of the time flatcase. It drives me insane when I try and autocomplete a folder only to realise it was Downloads instead of downloads. I keep telling myself i will go through and make it all flatcase but I put it off because i tell myself i will rebuild my computer next week every week.
Activity pub creators want all these different uses for the protocol but then reject the feature requests required to make ap viable for those uses.
