Having not yet used this service, I can’t comment on the service itself. What I will say is that it sounds interesting, until I realized one VERY important detail…

This service is designed to bring you all the content that you feed data locations to pull from. Ok, that’s all well and good, but the problem is, there’s such a lack of content on the fediverse that it’s not overwhelming right now to just log into Lemmy, see the 3-10 replies per day. Log into Mastodon, realize you’re following like 6 accounts and 5 of them are bots, with the 6th one barely posting.

This service is like a very useful water pump to pull water out of a body of water, and distribute it to a more convienent tank…and then you place it’s input in the middle of the Nevada desert. Doesn’t mean the water pump is faulty, or not expertly designed. Just means it needs water to pull from.

That seems to be my frustration with the fediverse. There are very few content CREATORS, who don’t revolve around a few basic topics. Politics, Technology…and that’s it. And yes, I’m lumping video games, linux, computers, all that into technology. If it’s something you need a screen for, or connects to something with a screen, that’s lumped into technology.

I mildly care about politics. Under normal circumstances I don’t care at all. I usually say “let other people worry about it.” But these last 8 years have been just a constant barrage of bullremoved, that it becomes necissary to care, as everybody is going to get removeded over otherwise.

Technology I have moderate interest in. I wouldn’t call it the most important thing to me, but I wouldn’t say I have zero interest either.

But then what…

Sports talk among locals is practically non-existant here (except for the Baltimore Oriols, who have a surprisingly strong community).

There’s a pro-wrestling community which seemingly has 4 active commentors, including mods, and 2-3 other people who pop in from time to time.

So I try to do my part to write at LEAST one entertaining post per day. Some days I write more. Most days I have half a dozen smaller bite size posts as little jokes or whatever. And then I try to post SOMETHING that people are going to disagree with. I feel like THIS post is that post for the day. Mostly because nobody likes to take responsibility for a community, and nobody likes being called out as being just a consumer, and not a producer of content.

And PeerTube is pathetic. Lemmy at least has some degree of variety. It’s not much, but it tries. Peertube on the otherhand is “EVERYTHING IS A LINUX VIDEO!!! ONLY LINUX EXISTS ON THIS PLATFORM!!!”

I can’t say I produce any video content, but with a linux only content platform, I can’t say I even consume either. It’s a service I want to like, but they make it so damned hard.

And Lemmy is easy to keep track of everything, and I run out of content usually within an hour. Even though I log in several times a day. It’s like drinking water from a shotglass when you want a galllon.

So I don’t see much use for this new thing. Not because it’s not a well made product, again, I have no usage experience, but because the sources it’s pulling from are barron dry.

I saw mastodon had a slight bump when that happened, but 90% of them went to bluesky. They got like 3 3 million users in 2 days. Mastodon got like …a few thousand?

Is there a thing like that which shows ALL the services, with how many each has?

I was told just last month that the fediverse had 60,000ish people. How the removed did it go from 60k to 12Mil in 1 month???

I used to watch “This Week in Tech” with Leo Laporte, before I realized he was a massive douche. And he always shortened his show name to TwiT.

I tried to do the same thing with your show name, and got “LwiF”, which when I said it outloud made me sound like I was inventing a new french word. Say it outloud. It’s fun to say. LWIF!

I thought you’d call him Cotton Hill.

Should be on by default, and unable to be deselected on every instance. Anyways, I went to your instance, searched “Cleveland”, and among some other crappy videos that aren’t worth watching I found THIS GEM

If this searches all of peertube, then it needs to be the default search on every peertube page.

I feel so bad for peertube. It’s such a great idea, but until it has a full platform wide search options, and regular content producers in areas OTHER than technology, it will never catch on.

If “TomHanks” is his username on every other service, like twitter, and youtube, and tiktok, and instagram, then he would want to use it when he comes to the fediverse. Now, if only ONE person can have the username TomHanks (and it just so happens to be @Lemmy.World), then he could send a cease and disist letter, and if that doesn’t work, a lawsuit. Madonna did it in the 90s with Madonna.com.

However, if TomHanks@Lemmy.World can exist, and TomHanks@Lemm.ee can exist, and TomHanks@piefed.social can exist and…and…and…then it gets a little impossible for him to really own that username, because it can be duplicated on an infinate amount of instances, some that may not even exist when he shows up to the fediverse.

But if only one instance can have TomHanks, than he could absolutely show courts he’s had a vested interest and usership of that identity and thus that’s HIS username. Even on services he’s never signed up for. Like if he doesn’t have an instagram account at all, but someone else starts using TomHanks on instagram, he can take it to the courts that they are not allowed to do that, because that’s his username.

But the way the fediverse is currently set up right now, that’s not feasible. Because he could enter a court battle with TomHanks@Lemm.ee, and then 5 more instances with his username popup. And eventually it becomes harder and harder to prove that people know his ownership of that username if there’s 500 other people also using the same username. It’s the reason you can’t email celebrities. They can’t control their presence in email, so they don’t use that as their identity.

I mean sure…but essentially you’re using the facts as they stand as justification that it will never work, when my whole point is that these facts as they stand need to change because they will never work unless we change them.

People keep using email, and domains as reasons for why it’s not an issue, but there’s a reason celebrities aren’t known for their email. You can tweet at celebrities, and you can follow celebrities on instagram, and all the other services, but you generally can’t email them.

Now, the reason for this is that celebrity wants to own the exact spelling and exact letter/number combination that they’re known for. I like to try to make things relatable to the person that I’m talking to, but let’s face it, abff08f4813c is a really really bad username for branding purposes. But, be that as it may, IF you were a celebrity, and everybody knew abff08f4813c on instagram, and everybody knew abff08f4813c on twitter, then if you were to come to the fediverse, you wouldn’t want a second abff08f4813c to exist. You would want to own “abff08f4813c” on every platform, even if you’re not on that platform. Even if you don’t use tiktok, you would want to make sure nobody else has the name abff08f4813c on tiktok.

The problem is, the fediverse is so fractured that’s not really logistically possible. Because if you try to sue one person on one other instance that has abff08f4813c, now suddenly 300 more abff08f4813c on 300 different instances all pop up.

What I’m suggesting is, no matter which instance you’re on, if you search abff08f4813c, the search should find that username, and direct you to the profile that corrilates with you. And even though that profile is only on one instance, it would make it so if I tried to make abff08f4813c, on another instance, I would be told that username is already taken.

From there, you could absolutely create an old twitter style verification system. And NOW celebrities will be more willing to use the fediverse. But until that changes, I don’t see any celebrity who values their own brand on an international scale, be willing to publically announce they are on the fediverse, and their fans can migrate to the fediverse to follow them.

Then no. If they migrate, thats a new account technically.

Are you trying to ban individual users for individual reasons? Or are you trying to ban all mastodon users?

So when you come to the fediverse, instead of searching for Tom_Hanks@tomhanks.com, you just search for Tom_Hanks, and the fediverse will know that defaults to the account Tom_Hanks. Which is the same account on Lemmy, the same account on Peertube, the same account on pixelfed.

Because it’s all Tom_Hanks.

Funny thing of note, when he first started posting, I thought he was a girl. Not sure why. But for like 2 days I assumed Don was a woman.

Because it’s not centralized. Every platform/instance just uses the same protocols. Any that try to go against that get defederated by all instances.
