Edit: what I mean is, if you are responsible for this transition, now study study study… Be very careful and test each setup on a “test” machine before going to deploy for others…

Its a solution to one of the typical Linux issues. Its a step toward overcaming the fragmentation of Linux package managers.

I don’t personally like it too much, I prefer the distro package stuff, but I understand the app developers cannot manage a plethora of different package formats.

Distro maintainters should, but its clearly more and more a massive task for different distros to keep up with the amount of apps out there.

Also, npm, pip and the various “packaging” ways existing add to the chaos.

I see distro package managers converge toward providing basic packages for the general system and some other solution like flatpack to provide additional stuff.

I think it would be wrong for flatpack/containers to replace package managers as well, it’s not their scope.

Well, yes, stage3 has been a revolution. But I don’t remember using stage1 directly. I started with Linux way earlier than gentoo… On 386.

Today on Intel i7/Xeon with 16gb ram I go from a stage3 to full GUI (plasma, no libreoffice or such) in a few hours.

To all gentoo detractors… 20 years ago compiling a browser would take 5 days (as in 24 x 5 hours…) So you are not allowed to complain TODAY about compile times ahahahaahaha ahahaha ahah haha aaaaaaaaah ಠ_ಠ

Gentoo all the way since 20 years, on all kind of devices, going strong and never looked back.

Ubuntu, I hate you. A messy complex windows-esque caricature in the Linux world, where “somebody else” knows better than me and shoves it down my gully.

So there you go, my best and worst distros choice.

And one tought: i do despise microsoft and i dont care if any of its products seems good. They re there to infiltrate and destroy, they have always been from msdos times, and rest assured thats what they will do also with vscode/codium.

Do not fall into this trick, make good products better, dont piggy back on who showed to stick it in your rear end again and again over time.

Not me, i use and like a lot QtCreator… Granted, i work with C/C++ so… But its Open Source, cross-platform, has tons of integeations with analyzers debuggers and various tools.

Kdevelop never triggered my bells and CodeBlocks just doesnt feels right for me, but thats me.

For everyrhing else vim or kate depending on how i feel.
