even on a less well-maintained system it’s probably not going to be the kernel having a freakout, the kernel is going to be just fine while something else removeds itself (probably graphics drivers on a desktop tbh, my vega 10 loves to vomit onto the screen and pass out)
as much as you can use windows without touching the command line, so long as you don’t removed about with stuff or want to do anything particularly fancy you have no reason to touch the terminal, but if you break stuff then just like with windows you’ll want to use the terminal to fix things because otherwise you’ll be spending 5 hours clicking your fingers off in a graphical problem solver.

linux at least gives you the information you need to slowly untangle things, sure you’ll be presented with a screen of inscrutable text, but you can just search that text online and get results that you can make sense of
meanwhile with other OSes they just say “there was a problem” and you have no earthly clue what the removed the actual issue is, if there even is one and the OS isn’t just being spiteful

a project can be as ideologically pure as it wants, but it’s not gonna accomplish much if that handicaps it out of anyone seriously using it.

that would be a sound investment and we can’t have that, the government must focus on actively detrimental infrastructure projects to put money in the pockets of rich people.
trivial to set up NAS with minimal overhead, plus you can boot any pc into this once it’s standard, which would be nice for rescuing when you removed something up: rather than fiddle around with rescue mode or digging out the drives you just boot into this mode and access the drives from your laptop or whatever.
