Ehh. What’s the average age around here? I’m guessing it wasn’t the youth that migrated from Reddit.
I’m using a 2060 with Mint with no problems. Well, short of the game I’m playing (Enshrouded) needing to validate its install every single time I open Steam, but I suspect that’s on Steam.
Do I need a mold or something? Can I just buy a tube of resin and use a cup I don’t care about?
This also deserves consideration. More eco-friendly, and it gives me a chance to practice my desoldering skills.
Worse. A classroom.
That’s good to know. I suppose most of us not knowing this is a good indicator of the average age around here. I think the last time I installed Windows from scratch was 7…
Linux is amazingly portable.
So I’m discovering! I might just have to install Linux on my home machine, but I’ve been running Windows for so long, I really worry I’m going to break something in that case. I also do a lot of audio production with that machine, and software compatibility might end up being a big problem.
That’s a great idea! I have an old HDD and a 300 watt PSU lying around somewhere. I suppose I could just mount it all on a board.
My right index finger still has an indent from using the clit-mouse to play Starcraft on a Thinkpad 25 years ago.
The older generation still skews largely conservative, and they (particularly the dreaded mother-in-law) expect certain behavior out of young, married women. When a couple get married, there is a prevailing attitude that the woman becomes a part of the man’s family and is expected to attend all their family gatherings, do a removed ton of cooking while the men get drunk and play games, and essentially forsake their own families. The number of grown men I’ve met that don’t know how to do a removeding load of laundry is disturbingly high because they’re molly-coddled (largely by their mothers) their entire lives. Particularly first-sons who are the only children who really matter to a lot of Korean parents and grandparents. Many women are - rightfully - rebelling against this. As are a lot of younger, more enlightened men.
Men on the other hand, are also rightfully upset that they are required to join the military for two years, usually right around the time they would be attending university. Which is giving women an edge in some aspects since they graduate sooner and don’t have their education interrupted by a military stint. Pretty sure the younger generation is in favor of getting rid of mandatory military service, but again, the older generation won’t have it. Especially with the North up there rattling their limp sabers constantly.
Basically, old conservatives ruin everything.
I bought my wife an HP Stream 13 some years back. It came with Windows 8 installed. Which worked just fine until updates bloated it so much it literally took up the entire (paltry) SSD. Windows 10 came out and it offered a free upgrade, which would have been smaller. Unfortunately, every time I tried to do that, it just complained it didn’t have the space to make the switch. I rolled it back to an older Windows 8 and disabled updates to try and keep using it. It complained constantly. I finally deleted the removed out of Windows and installed Lubuntu. It’s worked since then without issue.
Sounds like I made the right choice.
I did have the same old printer failure today though. I suspect its endemic to Linux (or WiFi printing in Linux) given a Google search turns up the same issue in a bunch of different Linux forums. Debian based and otherwise. It was quicker to right itself in Mint than it was in Ubuntu anyway.
I just downloaded the default (Cinnamon) Mint. Is there a particular reason to go with the Debian version?
I just switched from Ubuntu, which I’ve been using for almost twenty years, to Mint 21.3 and I’m impressed. Not only does it seem to have solved my printing problems (at least with one day of use so far, but I’ve had zero failures compared to multiple failures per day with Ubuntu), it just seems snappier (or is that snapless?) and smoother overall. Just dumb little things like remembering my sound device settings after reboot and letting me know the printer was out of paper. Ubuntu just seems clunky by comparison now. Hopefully it isn’t just the honeymoon phase.
I would look at that, but I bounced off VIM hard, so probably not for me.
