Anyone able to give an ELI5 to a linux noob? I’m struggling to find what the benefit is of Fedora’s atomic builds (is it just containerised apps? Is this an immutable distro?)…and then also what the benefit of Bazzite is on top of Fedora’s atomic spins?

The fact that there are so many well functioning options for a DE that this can be an argument, is such a great thing.

Does the creative commons licence at the end of every comment really do anything? Are you going to do anything about it if someone doesn’t respect the permissions you’ve laid out?

It will if Lemmy becomes successful. It will have to stay tiny and very niche. Or else all communities have to deal with Eternal September if they start getting a lot of users. Then communities will gravitate towards the same lowest common denominator content and comments seen elsewhere.

That’s exactly what I did at the start of this year. I made it a point to get an AMD graphics card. Glad I’ve never had to deal with Nvidia issues.

I jumped to Linux as a tech savy, Linux beginner and went through a bunch of distros before settling on Opensuse Tumbleweed, and it has been great. Fedora gets mentioned a lot as well but I never got round to trying that. If I were to choose today with a bit more Linux experience, I might choose Endeavour OS.

My understanding is that as far as gaming goes, some distros have some pre-intsalled conveniences, but you could game on any Linux flavour. If it’s just going to be Steam games, then Steam handles Proton and game compatibility itself. It might be worth looking up things like GPU and peripherals compatibility.

I sold my laptop and used my Steam Deck exclusively as my PC for a month before I collected all the parts for my new PC. If you’re going to use it for gaming then it makes an excellent multiple use device.

Even lurkers are still part of the community.

I started out looking for an exact replacement for Reddit (where I mostly lurk). Initially I thought the lack of content and traffic on Lemmy was a bad thing, but I now see it as early days of a community and lack of content means I have a chance to make a post or comment that is valued and gets engagement from other users. Reddit was so mature that anything I wanted to post was either already there, not welcome or buried under an ocean of other content/comments. If you use both you could even find good content on Reddit to crosspost on Lemmy.

It’s quite nice being part of a small community now. Even just an up/down vote from you will be worth more here. It’s great.
