You calling somebody out publicly is entirely to illicit a reaction from the crowd. Surely, a direct message would have been more appropriate for a disagreement over a series of downvotes?

By doing this publicly you’ve definitely made the situation way, way worse than it had to be.

I disagree with bringing in more redditors to this site. I think the community ambassador system is a quick way of creating a bunch of powermoderators on a system that’s supposed to be designed to resist that kind of behavior and centralization.

If you hate being downvoted because of disagreement, why would you want to bring more users who default to that behavior?

I also do not believe you should have any more power or capacity in the fediverse. It’s clear to me by your behavior in this thread that even basic things like being downvoted can set you off and make you decide to try to start a witch hunt.

Reddit promoted “downvote to disagree” and this is a consequence of the userbase having migrated from there.

You can say whatever you want about how it should work, but the bottom line is that most people using vote-based systems are voting up and down based on if they agree with what’s posted. It hasn’t been “downvote for off-topic” for over a decade.

I also think you are placing way too high importance on vote counts, and specifically pinging people is not the way to handle your disapproval.

I am not catloaf but I have a problem with people literally combing vote logs to call users out in comments. That’s toxic verging on obsessive.

Absolutely not the way to act as the face of a project. It accomplishes nothing besides making you look incredibly petty and dissuades people from supporting your work.

If somebody can’t moderate their instance in any kind of way that’s impacting other parts of the federation, it makes sense to defederate until they fix their problems.

I don’t think anybody should have open signups. It’s literally just an invitation to mess with the rest of us who are federated with the instance.

I think it boils down to preference of thumb vs pinky. The ergo choice is thumb but the conditioned choice is pinky.

I’ve had several Keychrons and the only one that failed on me was due to liquid damage. I’ve had three of them and the original one I purchased for working on a Mac is still running strong with a few coffee stains. The second one I bought with a backlight lasted two years and died by my own hand. I have a new backlit one with a different set of keycaps and it’s been going strong for a year with no issues.

I tend to buy the wired C2 series which is the cheapest lineup. The great thing about Keychrons is that they are highly repairable and customizable by the user. You can replace keycaps, switches, and the keyboards are all designed to support both layouts with each requisite key included for Command and Windows. It can toggle to either OS via the flip of a switch, and you can attach the keycaps you prefer.

I use the Windows layout on all of my machines that run Linux, personally. You could easily keep the Windows configuration switch and just uh, replace the key I guess if that’s your aesthetic preference. I would probably do that if I were in your position. The keycaps are included and it’s not going to interfere unless you flip the switch.

I love the London transit system. It’s so good. I had the wonderful opportunity to visit last November and traveling by rail was great. I especially love your day pass systems that allow you free transfers between trains and busses across the entire region.

As a Torontonian, it was really funny to hear we hired one of the developers of the Underground to help us work on our subway and transit system. Their response was basically “you don’t really have a subway system” so all they did was automate payment processing and quit.

For gaming it’s hard to beat Arch, still, because of how much active development is being put in by people like Steam.

The way federation works is that everything is replicated across all federated servers. If an admin team does not want to have to moderate specific kinds of content or users who are deemed detrimental (but not necessarily illegal) they have the ability and right to defederate.

Also, I’ve blocked servers but it doesn’t block users. Defederation does though.

You guys realize that the server rules regionally only apply regionally, and not globally right? If you don’t like the rules of your nation state it’s very easy to move your hosting elsewhere where the rules you are trying to avoid are not going to apply.

Just because India has some massive breaking sweeping law doesn’t really change anything about our other servers if they are just not in that jurisdiction. Lemmy.ca is not going down for Indian rules, because we’re hosted in Canada. Lemmy.ml I would imagine is also not hosted in India.

The fediverse is not even big enough (we’re about the size cumulatively of like a medium subreddit) to really want to actively police.

It’s like saying Iran or anywhere else in the Middle East has powerful internet control, as if that’s going to change literally anything hosted outside of those incredibly repressive nations. Unless India has some agreement with other states long-term to remove content they disagree with, literally nothing is going to change. I know North American sentiment towards India is not strong these days because of the recent assassinations (and/or attempts) within our borders of Sikh “extremists”.

I wish everything was a bit more standardized between kbin/mbin/Lemmy. It feels like we have these forks of the project that do different things because they emulate different behaviors of other sites, and reaching parity seems difficult without a lot of developer discussion.

I like a few things about kbin but for a while it was the instance causing the most spam on my feed because federated mod actions broke and spam cleaned up locally would not get cleaned on other instances. I saw Ernest back posting again so I guess development has resumed and some of those issues have been banged out.

But it doesn’t bootstrap conversation properly, because some OP on an entire other website is asking for help, and we’re talking to brick walls.

Lemmy is more helpful for Linux help than reddit is anyways, because on reddit they’ll tell you to removed off and search, while on Lemmy I can still get hands-on support with a willing community.

That’s the problem with federation though, you have 20 servers with 20 communities of the same thing, and there’s not many people redirecting and curating, because everybody wants to be a powermod. When we had the reddit migration it started a chain reaction nightmare of creating an infinite number of dead, useless, redundant communities. I like to use sports as a good example. Fanaticus.social is designed to be the premiere sports instance, yet all the local instances, like .ca or midwest.social, also will have their requisite team pages.

I think it only serves to continue to keep reddit afloat. If our stuff does get crossposted, then we’re effectively just still using reddit. The point was to leave the platform because of the leadership, not kinda continue to half use it by proxy.

It’s a bandage that needs to be ripped off, not re-applied.

I don’t think there are any high quality discussions left to be had with the current suite of redditors.

The strength of the Lemmy community in my opinion is the high quality of discussion, and there is no discussion to be had on reddit reposts when we are not having our content reposted onto reddit.
