In my opinion you’re overthinking it.
Just get a live distro, put it on a USB, and boot into it. If it meets your needs, then install it.
The upgrade option is annoying. CLI Toys aren’t worth paying for IMO.
The hurd kernel exists, and is a theoretical alternative to the Linux kernel

IMO KDE neon is just phenomenal. Try the live CD before you make a choice.
