Everyone’s different idk. I myself love command line. I have enjoyed Linux for a long time but it didn’t really become my daily driver until recently. I find it very rare that I use the GUI for more than gaming and watching stuff. Everything else is command line. I’ve had friends refuse to try Linux due to the “requirement” of needing to do stuff in command line. When I showed them some newer distros that appeal to users who don’t really feel comfortable with command lines.

Wow crazy detail. I’ll read it when I get a chance lol. I stopped at “I’m a single tasker” I recently learned about the term “monotropism” which is so me.

I use arch.
edit: lol while I am new to arch, I guess I kind of expected people to disagree with me. I was under the impression that stock arch is very lightweight? I know there used to be jokes about “I installed Arch” cause it’s supposed to be hard. But I installed Arch on my desktop and server recently, I did the manual install on my desktop and the guided install on my server. Both super straight forward. Plus Arch seems to have some of the best documentation across distros. I don’t know why it should not be suggested, unless I am missing something.

I love arch. I want to switch to NixOS for my home server but I think I’ll be sticking with arch for my main I see no further reason to switch.

Would this let global menu (plasma) on Firefox work better under Wayland? I remember someone saying that Wayland was the reason it didn’t work.

I haven’t used pop os but I always hear good. I really do hope they switch to Debian. Ubuntu should not be so many people’s first choice anymore. 10+ years ago sure but now? No reason. They just push so hard the newbies gravitate to them.

On top of that I’m still baffled how they let a contributor purposefully removed up a translation to the point they had to stop downloads. Sure bad eggs happen but how did they not notice until after… especially with what happened with cyberpunks translation.

So happy I finally moved from Ubuntu to arch finally last week.

I had a similar thought. I got a plugin for neovim that lets you manage files and folders with nvim and seems like a quick way to easily move a bunch of files and folders around.

I haven’t really used it, as you said I stick with shell commands. But I could see some people getting used to that. Especially when dealing with a lot of files or photos and you really like vim lol

I’m currently setting up a NixOS vm and ssh in to setup all the packages my current Ubuntu server runs. It’s been fun. I can’t wait to actually move over.

Didn’t even cross my mind. So I can install it on my current Ubuntu server to get familiar with it. Def gonna try.

Yeah once I’m brave enough to move OS on my server (currently running Ubuntu server) I want to switch it to NixOS.

Back in like 2011 I was living out of state for college. Had decided to drop out at the time so had limitless free time for a bit. I definitely used that time to compile my own kernel and setup gentoo lol. I haven’t played with gentoo since but it was fun and helped my appreciation for Linux.

Yeah my big issue is the software we use is all windows based. I don’t even technically need to use my work laptop to do most my work so I considering just a windows VM on my desktop

I officially switched my desktop and server to Linux. If I could switch my work computer I would. I bought a MacBook Air recently because I didn’t know Linux laptops were getting so popular. But I like the Mac and can still do some Linux like stuff in the terminal.

Just wish I could stop windows use at work.

Yeah I get it. My goal was since the Lemmy world community was pretty inactive if I can post more to encourage activity on mine I can make mine more active and the defacto community which helps get people off of Lemmy world.

If it were a community that is highly active on Lemmy world then I understand it doesn’t seem productive to re create active communities.

I have heard other people voice opinions that having multiple of the same communities over different instances is a good thing with how Lemmy works. I do wish we had a federated community so as people make more communities on different instances it more merges them into one so if one instance goes down the others are still keeping the community alive. But idk if that’s possible or on the Lemmy roadmap.
