I tried what you are describing: Using a Pi4 and loading lineageOS (KonstaKANG) on it. Before that I tried libreELEC with Kodi or something like that… Internet via WLAN. Both setups suck. Everything is slow, input with my cableless keyboard/touchpad is laggy and I am not using the TV because of it… Watching jellyfin on my smartphone is more convenient.

But I am new to all this stuff, so maybe I missed some ways to optimize this setup. Next time I will just take a long HDMI cable and connect the TV with my main PC.

I am impressed, creating btrfs sub-volumes in a debian installation with muscle memory would look like magic to me (as a linux-beginner).

But if all the standard settings are ok for you and you only have to hit enter, I guess the installer is ok.

FreeCAD isn’t an abomination. Maybe it feels like one for you, but that isn’t the truth for everyone.

I for one enjoy it very much. My workflow for building carports with the arch and part workbench feels quite solid, no crashes and I am fast enough to make profit.

I am using input by a pen a lot, to draw in my PDFs. It seems like Starlite doesn’t support that? I hope I am wrong, this is a major reason for 2-in-1s, isn’t it.

Did you use the linux-surface-kernel? This project is awesome for getting as many functions of a surface running as possible. There are lots of useful information and tipps for every surface model too.

I bought a Microsoft Surface Book 2 when I wasn’t converted yet. BUT: now it kind of rules. There is a custom Linux Kernel for Surface devices, everything except the camera works now. That means especially: attach and detach the screen from the Keyboard and use the pen with all it’s features.

I wouldn’t buy a surface device now, because I don’t want to support Microsoft. But if you find a Book 2 for cheap, this would be a possible solution to your search.

I understand Fedora user completely, it is a great distro and great for beginner. But so is Mint, especially now that there is a Debian based version. So for me it comes down to the question, who do I want to support, RedHat or the community? So I go with Mint most of the time. But no hate for Fedora or Fedora-recommendations.

You are right of course, the advantages of big money and great engineers are obviously there. But using a system means also supporting the system and I want to support the debian devs more than Redhat. And it has no downside, Debian is awesome.

Common standards can be devolped by big companys, they also can be developed by communities. GNU utils and the Linux kernel came out of a community. I like this way much more. And if companies decide to back those projects, it is fine by me. As long as they don’t overtake the project and become too dominant.

I think it is summarized by “because it is backed by a big company”, like Ubuntu. Compared to Debian or Arch, which are community based distros, many people think (me included) that it is a bad thing, that one company has so much control over one distro. They tend to make decisions that benefit them, not the user.
