Your PC network card keeps the connection up in order to receive wake on LAN requests.
Any link activity whilst the PC is shutdown is packets that were broadcasted to the entire network. Other PCs, DHCP requests, etc send traffic to all devices on the network. So seeing some traffic whilst it’s off is nothing to worry about.
Is that really 1% of the population incarcerated? Wow
https://demo.scrypted.app/ is the new kid on the block. Intuitive interface, easy to configure, not free, great system.
With the user id being salted it’s going to be different every time. This means it’ll be difficult if not impossible to monitor voting trends or abuse.
Also how would you use the password unless it was stored in the clear. If it’s based on a pre-salted tuple, how does one handle password changes?
The graph makes it look like there are 1000 athletes who are 69 yrs old
How come you don’t post from your own lemmy
I have my dream domain. It was being squatted for a similar amount. I offered £100 and it was declined, I offered £250 and they replied to tell me the domain is easily worth the £2K, well sort after etc. I told them that this is my surname, and I’m not a corporation with unlimited funds and they can take the offer or leave it. 15 minutes later the offer was accepted. I was so happy. Still am chuffed about it.
If you use Mettle, the phone based bank, you get FreeAgent for free. FreeAgent is a really good web based accounting package that works in Firefox. They gave a useful accompanying API and can do payroll, VAT, end of year and director self assessment. It’s great.
I’ve used Linux for decades but not for desktop usage. I work with Linux every day.
I recently purchased a high end workstation to act as a hypervisor for multiple desktop systems. The plan was to boot into a Linux system and then from there load up one of many desktop OS and work seamlessly within a VM. This has worked well on a Windows host with VMWare Workstation and allows me as a contractor to have separation of configuration between customers.
However I found Linux desktop to have too many glitches. From failed package installs, multiple monitor problems and some special keys being sent to both VM and host. I also found the user interface of some apps to be bad, which I can look past but with the other fundamental issues it added a bad taste to the experience. I really want it to work and I do go back every now and then to try again.
Reminds me of the package “cmatrix”
LVM allows online resizing of volumes, and includes redundancy features such as snapshots and raid.
It’s used a lot more in services than laptops.
What are these sizes from? All my Linux installs start with <20G root disks and end up with some spare.
And Windows at 72G? Whilst it’s more than Linux it’s not that much.
docker compose up
I expect there are instances running on old laptops in someone’s basement. Once the novelty wears off they will get forgotten by admins and die. Power costs, admin overhead, will put some off continuing to host as time goes on. But it’s like a hydra, more will pop up and life continues on. I’m lucky that I work in IT and have equipment hosted at the DC for little cost, so self hosting my Lemmy access is cool in a geeky kind of way.
Aw man. ICQ. I miss those times.
My employer is an MS shop so needs RDP, and then SSH for the Linux systems I’ve introduced.
Something else I miss on Linux is a good alterantive to RoyalTS. RDP, SSH, VNC, etc. connectivity manager. Remmina I think is the closest but its not as good.
Holy removed. This is what I needed. Thank you, thank you!
I like to run a hypervisor host as just that, a hypervisor host. The host being stable is important, and also reduce attack surface by only having it as that.
An LXC per service is somewhat overkill. A docker host running on LXC could likely run all the docker containers.
