MessEase had a long-press to get to the number layer. The time interval was adjustable. I hope to see something like that.

I learned by only doing crosswords (in MessagEase). I couldn’t bear slowing down writing. Since crosswords feel more like letter-by-letter word-building instead of word-by-word sentence-building, it made progress less frustrating. Now, I use MessagEase nearly 100%, but I’m switching to thumbkey today.

Long pressing to access the number layer was nice in MessagEase. That feature doesn’t look available on ThumbKey.

I think I’ll just bite the bullet and switch to thumbkey now. I’m not willing to subscribe to inputting.

What would more extreme, but not inappropriate, is for Valve to send a cease and desist to stop Canonical from using the Steam logo on a package Valve does not maintain. I don’t think that’s warranted. But calling a little text clarification “extreme” is nonsense.

But Canonical using that logo is pretty misleading. I notice the thumbnail adds some Canonical-flare to the logo, but it’s not there on snapcraft.

awk will always have a soft spot for me, but I can see why not many take the time to learn it. It tends to be needed right there at the border of problem complexity where you are probably better using a full-fledged scripting tool.

But learning awk is great for that “now you’re thinking in pipes” ah-hah moment.

I believe Mint tries to have minimal dependence on the command line. But usually it’s easier to help others solve problems with the command line since that is easier to write out than how to click through menus. So don’t let it scare you too much.

If you’d like to know my experience with Unity DE, I thought it felt like a toy and when it was packaged with Ubuntu, it was the first time I left vanilla Ubuntu since the days of Gutsy Gibbon.

I’m glad to hear Unity getting love. The customizability is by far linux’s key strength. So it can give people what they want. For example, it gives me the ability to completely ignore Unity.

I was just making a joke, but I use xinput to disable my laptop keyboard and put my 60% on top. But I was not seriously recommending you change your keyboard.

I feel a bit like Groucho when it comes to keyboards. If you want my honest advice, I don’t trust your judgement.

When I bought a system76, I didn’t think for a second to check whether it was on Canonical’s list. I didn’t even know there was a certification.

So I believe the poster meant, a buyer can be sure they are getting hardware with linux support regardless of a list kept by ubuntu. But if you are buying from a brand that has no pledge to be linux friendly, a list of what works out of what’s available helps.
