    1. Takes a bit to get set up with something passable. The default Lemmy UI is kinda removed and you have to figure out which apps to use to make it work for you. It can feel a little unpolished initially.
    2. Niche communities just aren’t there yet. There is a lot of effort in creating them, but low engagement. It also doesn’t help that federation can mean communities on one topic are divided.
    3. Content can get a bit stale. I feel I see fresh content for about an hour a day and then have to wait another day before the next batch. When I browse throughout the day I start to notice the same stories popping in my feed over and over. Sometimes this happens for days on ended with one story just kinda coming back.

  • Haven’t heard much about them lately, which I just learned through this post is because they defederated from everyone else. Anything I’ve read about them is that they want a certain type of community, but beyond that they’re really vague. I avoided signing up for their instance because they seemed kind of uptight and I’d rather be in a place that is welcoming to more people with diverse interests. It’s going to be hard to replace Reddit and being too uptight about who joins just kind of seems like a recipe not to have enough people to have an active community.
