As you’ve probably heard, it’s basically just NVidia with removedty drivers. They are getting better but are not included in many distros (they can usually be added through the package manager pretty easily) since they are proprietary. Intel and AMD generally work out of the box for gaming. NVidia drivers are bad enough that I sold my 2060 for an ARC a750 just because of the drivers lol.
Depending on the use, you may be able to spin then down when not in use, but that’s not always possible for some applications.
For me, I found that there were a few channels I subscribe to on youtube that also upload on freetube, so I watch their videos on freetube instead. I also find that the image quality is better than youtube.
I have one and opted for a Oneplus 6 running postmarketOS because of the pinephone’s many shortcomings:
Some things I liked:
I might have stayed with the pinephone if it was more powerful like the pro, and might have brought a battery bank so I don’t have to worry about running out.
I know for me personally, its worth the time to set things up myself since I usually learn something new along the way. If you don’t care about the learning aspect and just want the finished product, paying someone else is probably a good idea.
That’s seems like a good idea, considering the plethora of videos online of packages being stolen with an obvious camera watching the thieves.
bro, just use firefox or Librewolf or something.
That and it has full functionality in the browser. No bullremoved “download the app”.
I find phone images too always look overprocessed, specifically sharpened and denoised.
Yeah. One of the major reasons I never plan to use Proton or Tutanota is that none of my email apps will work and I will rely on whatever interface they provide.
Yeah, libredirect is awesome. It’s useful even if I remember all the frontends, since it means even embedded and linked videos use whatever frontend I want in the case of Youtube.
At least for ProtonVPN, you can install the wireguard app and import a protonVPN config and get the base functionality with no bullremoved.
And if you use Llama, then your queries are not sent to OpenAI.
I bought a small APC UPS about a year ago and am glad I did. In my area, very brief outages are somewhat common so a small UPS will work for the majority of outages.
A download manager I found to work well generally was aria2c. Only really worth it if you are on linux but it is simple yet powerful.
Have a look at lvra.gitlab.io. It should be possible to get the rift s mostly working.
You could buy the same modem that is in the pinephone in mini pcie format and use a usb adaptor to connect it to a pi.
I think a project that uses the pi cm4 format and adds a modem, screen, buttons, speaker and bms to be a compelling open-source phone.
While I really want the pinephone to be good, I just could not use it for daily use given its extremely poor battery life. I ended up getting a oneplus 6 and running postmarketOS before switching to DivestOS for camera support. I might switch back given that updating packages is much easier on linux compared to android.
Discord is also quite the resource hog. Trying to run the web version on weaker phones is a slog.
