I can’t find any working mastodon instances for porn except adult.18plus.social but i need to pay a fee… i̵ ̵n̵e̵e̵d̵ ̵f̵r̵e̵e̵ ̵o̵n̵e̵s̵.̵. (EDITED: SORRY) Actually there used to be Sinblr, Humblr, and others… but they all shut down for some weird reason I don’t understand… WHAT HAPPENED?
Let’s see if we can put the context clues together.
All of the free ones were shut down. Only the paid one survived.
Well, I can only assume, but since fediverse services are hosted by real humans and not corporations, I’m going to go out on a limb and say they couldn’t afford to stay afloat.
Another alternative is that requiring payment is a simple way to ensure that the people using your service are also 18+, since it requires a sign in form, acknowledgement, and then credit card. That helps when the feds come knocking on your door asking why you’re letting minors into your service.
It’s also the only real good method of KYC for when the feds come knocking on your door asking why you’re letting people who are posting pictures of minors onto your service, and asking-but-not-really who they are.
I love the fediverse, but there are a ton of whiny entitled people here who don’t understand that regular people are hosting these things with their own money and time. I do host my own Lemmy instance, and it’s been one of the most stressful things in my life. I never thought I’d have to register with the federal government as a mandatory CSAM reporter but here I removeding am. Then they go around and say “I need free ones”. The removed you do. If you need free porn and removed go host it yourself, you can have your house raided by the feds for hosting stuff that isn’t okay.
100%. The risks of running fedi-services that veer off SFW content is immense in a lot of places.
The really terrifying thing that people misunderstand because TV drama is that the feds knocking at your front door is the last step of an investigation, not the first.
If the FBI is knocking on your door wanting to talk about illegal content you’re hosting, they’ve ALREADY served warrants/subpoenas to your hosting providers and ISP and anyone else they think might have useful data, had a PRTT on you for a while watching everything you do online, and have had a prosecutor decide you’re someone that they want to prosecute and lock the removed up.
They’re there to see if they can scare you into saying something against your interests, and could maybe change their mind if you can explain what’s going on in a way that’s protected. Of course, they’re much more reasonable than local cops, but seriously: the FBI at your door is the last stop BEFORE you end up in federal prison for the next decade.
and all I wanted was to host a community about Taylor Swift, and yet here we are.
Those alphabet boys are making all our lives a bit too nerve wracking…
Is it not possible to have the hosting done by a company off-site? Is it a cost thing? Or is it that you didn’t know how deep the rabbit hole of complexity goes?
Sounds to me like it’d be easier to just hire some company and say “You do it.” I would never want the hassle of it being “in my house”.
I did, as soon as I learned about the CSAM I moved to the cloud. I like hosting myself, but that moves a possible seizure of assets from my house to my cloud account. Still, I’m sure coming to my house isn’t out of the question.
Ok i understand now… thank you for your effortful reply…
